TYPES OF DOCUMENTS
Documents for Transportation of the Deceased
Documents for Transportation of the Deceased across international borders is usually a challenge. There are many factors involved in this process. Foreign officials, customs officers, transportation companies, and other authorities on in both the United -States and in foreign countries have to verify that the contents of a coffin or the urn meet all specific national rules and regulations of each country involved.
Both the legalization process, the required documents, and the translation requirements may vary significantly from one country to another. Nonetheless, most countries will require the following documents:
- Apostilled Certified Copy of the Death Certificate
- Burial / Transit
- Permit Letter of Non-contagious Disease
- Embalmers Affidavit
- Passport of the Deceased (if obtainable)
- Letter (on funeral home letterhead) stating:
- Only human remains are inside the coffin or urn.
- The flight itinerary
- Consigneee's Name, address, and phone number
Generally, Documents for Transportation of the Deceased submitted for an Apostille must be the original, notarized, signed by an official or be a certified copy. Documents written in a foreign language must be submitted along with a Certified Translation.
Please Note - If a document is issued by a state, an Apostille can only be processed in that state's jurisdiction. For example a Death Certificate issued in Montana can only be Apostilled in Montana. If the funeral home is located in Idaho, the funeral papers must be Apostilled in Idaho (the State they were issued).
If Documents for Transportation of the Deceased are needed for a Non-Hague Country the documents will also need to be legalized through the United States Department of State (USDOS) and country's Embassy / Consulate Office.
Once we receive your documents, in order to minimize errors and processing time, we verify all documents received from notaries before submitting them to be Apostilled to the proper State. We will contact you as soon as possible if any errors are encountered and we will instruct you on how they need to be corrected.
Obtaining an Apostille can be a complicated process and should not be left to someone who does not understand all of the steps involved. Untrained persons that do not understand all of the requirements for legalization in each country are more likely to make errors, which will severely delay the Apostille process and cost you more money.
Once the completed English Documents for Transportation of the Deceased are properly prepared you can mail them to us to be Apostilled. We can also provide Certified Translation Services into the language required by the Country of Designation. Here at Ezra Notary and Apostille
