Proof of Life
You will need a Proof of Life Document (or Certificate of Life) Apostilled if you moved to a foreign country but receive a pension or other financial benefits. The Proof of Life Document is used by foreign governments, and institutions to qualified pensioners and other beneficiaries living abroad to certify that you are still alive, so that they can continue receiving your financial benefits.
A Proof of Life Document must be presented to a Notary Public, asking the Notary to certify that the person named in the document is currently living.
- If the Proof of Life Document simply require the individual named in the document to have their signature notarized with a standard notatial act such as a Jurat.
- However, most State Laws do not permit a Notary to certify that the signer is currently alive. Generally most States Laws only permit a Notary to identify a signer and notarize their signature.
- State of Washington - Washington Notaries are permitted to certify that an event has occurred or that an act has been performed (i.e. a pensioner is alive on a specified day).
- State of Louisiana - Louisiana Notaries have broader authority and may certify a signer's status on a Proof of Life Document.
- Puerto Rico - Puerto Rican Notaries also have broader authority and may certify a signer's status on a Proof of Life Document.
