Translation Foreign Driver's License
If you are a foeign motorists who visits the United States of America as a tourists you can legally drive using your valid Foreign Driver's License for a period of time IF you are from any country that is party to the following Conventions:
- The United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva, 1949) and
- The Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Moter Vehicle Traffic (Washington, D.C., 1943)
In all States, this period begins from the date of arrival and is not to exceed one year. However, some states have shorter time restrictions (i.e. Colorado requires you to surrender your original license and apply for a Colorado driver's license within 90 days).
However, in addition to having a valid Foreign Driver's License, foreign visitors to the United States of America are advised to:
1. Attach an English Translation to their Foreign Driver's License.

2. Carry an International Driving Permit
Foreign visitors to the United States of America are also advised to carry an International Driving Permit, as authorized by the following Conventions:
- 1926 Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic
- 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, and
- 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic
The International Driving Permit is translated into the nine official languages of the United Nations, including English, and serves as a translation to be used in conjunction with the visitor's valid Foreign Driver's License.
Visitors to the United States of America must obtain their International Driving Permits in their native country prior to their arrival in the United States of America.
Individuals entering the United States of America, other than visitors, must obtain a Driver's License from the appropriate State Authority upon their arrival into this country.
